Orthokeratology: FAQ

If you are tired of relying on eyeglasses or contact lenses to see correctly, there are treatments available that can treat your refractive error without needing them. Many people choose Lasik surgery. Unfortunately, some people aren't good candidates. Others don't want to go with such a permanent procedure. Positive Eye Ons can offer an alternative treatment called Orthokeratology, also known as Ortho-K.

Q: What Is Ortho-K?

A: Ortho-K is a special contact lens that is designed to change the shape of your cornea, to correct your refractive error.

Q: How Does Ortho-K Work?

A: Before you go to bed, you would put the contacts in your eyes. While your sleep, they reshape your cornea. When you wake up, you will take out the lenses, and you will be able to see correctly without the need for glasses or contacts.

Q: How Long Does It Take For Ortho-K to Start Working?

A: When your eye doctor first gives you the contacts, it often takes a couple of nights to see the full effect. The amount of time that it takes depends on the person. Until you start feeling the full effect of the contacts, you will need to wear your glasses during the day.

Q: How Long Does Ortho-K Last?

A: The effects of Ortho-K will last the entire day. From the time you wake up in the morning until you put the lenses in before bed, you won't need your glasses or contacts.

Q: What Happens If I Don't Wear My Lenses?

A: If you forget to put your lenses in one night, you should be fine. After two nights of not wearing your lenses, your vision can worsen. After 72-hours of not wearing your lenses, your cornea will return to its original shape, making you need your glasses or contacts again.

Q: Can I Wear Ortho-K If I Have Dry Eye?

A: Dry eye makes you a poor candidate for Lasik because laser surgery can exacerbate the symptoms. Ortho-K is an excellent alternative if you have dry eye. Since you are wearing the lenses only while you sleep and your eyes are closed, the lenses won't make your symptoms worse.

Q: Can a Child Use Ortho-K?

A: Yes. In fact, many eye doctors prescribe Ortho-K to children as young as 8-years-old as a myopia control treatment.

If you are not a good candidate for Lasik, or if you don't want to do something so permanent, the doctors at Positive Eye Ons in West Hollywood can fit you with Ortho-K lenses, and relying on glasses or contacts will be a thing of the past.
