Cataract Awareness Month with our West Hollywood Optometrist

Prevent Blindness America is an organization that educates the public about eye health and eye care. They have declared June as Cataracts Awareness Month.  Positive Eye Ons is your West Hollywood optometry office of choice to help you protect yourself from developing this condition, which affects twenty-two million Americans each year. There are specific steps that one can take, especially in one's earlier years, to lessen the chances of developing the condition.

What are Cataracts?

Cataracts occur when the eye's lens becomes cloudy, resulting in a decreased range of vision. This eye condition is the most common cause of vision loss in those over age 40 and is the leading cause of blindness in the world. The lens of the eye is important because this is what causes the images you see to come into focus. When cataracts occur, it can difficult to distinguish the edges of objects. Cataracts can also cause both glare and color sensitivity.

There are three main types of cataracts:

  • Subcapsular cataracts appear on the backside of the lens. You are at a higher risk of developing subcapsular cataracts if you have diabetes or take large doses of steroid medications.

  • Nuclear cataracts occur within the nucleus of the lens. This is the type of cataract most often associated with aging.

  • cortical cataracts occur in cortex area of the eye's lens.

What Causes Cataracts?

Science has shown that the eye lens may become damaged when exposed to ultraviolet radiation, which causes the protein in the lens to break down, so it is always important to wear proper eye protection outdoors. Other risk factors can also come into play.
