Tips for Fireworks Safety Month

With summer here, millions of Americans will start spending more time enjoying the hot weather, swimming, going to outdoor gatherings, and enjoying the holiday fireworks. While many people associate fireworks with injuries involving the limbs, they can also affect the eyes. In preparation for the 4th of July, June is recognized as Fireworks Safety Month. Here are some tips from our West Hollywood optometrist at Positive Eye Ons Optometry.

What is Fireworks Safety Month?

Fireworks Safety Month begins in June and ends on Independence Day, the single-most fireworks-centric holiday. Prevent Blindness America introduced this event to teach people that fireworks can hurt more than just hands.

From artillery fireworks to rockets, Roman candles to fountains, and everything in between, many of these fireworks are handheld. With the right usage, these fireworks are all part of the holiday fun. If you don’t know what you’re doing with them, though, you could seriously hurt yourself and others around you.

Not only that, but some people buy fireworks illegally to get in on the summertime fun, including dangerous fireworks known as cherry bombs, M-250s, M-100s, M-80s, and more. These fireworks are far more unpredictable in their nature.

Why Is Fireworks Safety Month Important?

According to the National Safety Council, more than 11,000 Americans experienced injury from fireworks in 2016 alone. There were also four fatalities that year. These injuries and deaths are all avoidable.

The proximity of fireworks to the face though means that the eyes can be damaged and potential blindness can occur. That’s why Fireworks Safety Month should be on more peoples’ radars.

Tips on Keeping Your Eyes Safe

If you want to keep your eyes safe, follow these tips:

  • Don’t use fireworks if you’re not sure how to safely operate them.

  • Keep fireworks far away from children.

  • If you must use fireworks, never do so indoors.

  • Use safety glasses or goggles if you’re lighting fireworks or in the proximity of someone else who is.
