Do MiSight® Contacts Slow Myopia?

According to a recent study, it is highly likely that at least half of the world’s population will suffer from myopia by 2050. Cases of myopia have been on the rise at an alarming rate. Also known as nearsightedness, myopia develops when an individual’s eyeball grows longer than normal, resulting in blurry vision. This condition is very common among children.

Fortunately, new research has brought about strategies to manage myopia. One of the ways to slow down the development of myopia is the use of MiSight® contact lenses. These lenses are known to slow the progression of myopia in children from ages 8-12 years old. They are much more effective than glasses and normal contact lenses that merely offer a correction for the impaired vision caused by the condition.

Problems Myopia Can Cause

Myopia affects vision in children. If left unattended, children with uncorrected nearsightedness experience blurred vision, especially if the object is at a distance. This condition can affect a child’s everyday activities such as reading from a blackboard at school or taking part in sports. Myopia is believed to cause more problems later in life such as the increased risk of sight-threatening issues like glaucoma, cataracts, and retinal detachment.

How Does MiSight Slow Down Myopia?

MiSight is the first contact lens to be approved by the FDA. It has been proven to slow down myopia progression in children. MiSight is developed by CooperVision and it is a disposable soft lens. These lenses can only be worn during the daytime and not overnight. However, a patient can go a day without wearing the lenses and that will not adversely affect the treatment.

The lenses of MiSight are designed to induce peripheral myopic to defocus. This concept is believed to prevent myopic progression. The contacts are equipped with peripheral plus ‘rings’ and a central zone of full myopic to defocus. Patients are recommended to wear them like standard contact lenses.

Are There Any Side Effects?

Potential side effects of MiSight Contacts are minor and even greatly reduced if you follow the instructions of your Eye Doctor and keep up to date your scheduled appointments. We are happy to further discuss potential side effects during your first appointment.

Other Remedies for Blurry Vision

Patients with blurred vision are advised to take their condition seriously. The eyes are the most important senses in the body. Patients are advised not to strain their eyes during times of fatigue. They are also advised to have enough sleep each night and not to allow their eyes to get dried out. If you have dry eyes, use lubricating eye drops. Patients should also avoid all blue light screens such as TV, phones, and computers one hour prior to bedtime. These simple remedies can help alleviate haziness or cloudiness.
