Are You a Candidate for Ortho-K Treatment?

Ortho-K is an effective treatment for nearsightedness (myopia) in most people. If your child is nearsighted, or if you are old enough to have grandchildren—any nearsighted person with healthy eyes, from age 7 to 70, may benefit from Ortho-k. Orthokeratology (temporary corneal reshaping) treatment from our optometrist in West Hollywood is worth looking into if you or someone you love struggles with myopia. Ortho-k can allow you to see well without wearing eyeglasses or traditional contact lenses.

What is Ortho-K?

Ortho-k involves contact lenses, but these lenses are different than normal contacts. Ortho-k lenses are worn only at night while sleeping and gradually reshape the eye so that the focus is sharper and clearer. The reshaping is temporary and easily reversible, however, if one stops wearing the special contacts. Ortho-k is part of the comprehensive menu of eye care options offered by our West Hollywood eye doctor. After a two-week adjustment period, some patients only have to wear Ortho-k lenses once or twice per week to maintain their vision correction.

Who Benefits Most from Ortho-K?

If you have the following vision problems, you could benefit from orthokeratology treatment from our eye doctor:

  • Ortho-K works best for people with blurry distance vision (myopia or nearsightedness) who require a corrective lens prescription of up to -6.00.

  • Low to moderate astigmatism (un-even eye curvature) may also respond well to Ortho-k contact lenses.

  • High levels of astigmatism should improve but typically don’t have as good of a result as those with lower astigmatism.

  • Farsighted people (individuals with hyperopia) experience variable results with Ortho-k treatment. Your optometrist in West Hollywood may recommend trying Ortho-k for farsightedness, because of the results, if not sufficient, are temporary and reversible.

  • Presbyopia patients, who wear reading glasses, will probably still need the reading glasses after Ortho-k, but their nearsightedness should be reduced.
