Glaucoma Testing in West Hollywood

One of the tests your optometrist will perform is done to detect increased pressure in the eyes, a condition called “glaucoma." Glaucoma is a progressive eye disease that can rob you of your vision if left untreated. At Positive Eye Ons Optometry in West Hollywood, we offer comprehensive eye examinations that can detect the early signs of glaucoma.

Understanding Glaucoma

Glaucoma is an eye disease that damages the optic nerve of the eyes. In most cases, the damage is caused by increased fluid buildup, which causes pressure inside the eyes. This pressure, over time, causes damage to the optic nerve. In the early stages, you may not notice any symptoms or vision loss. However, the damage is progressive, and over time, causes loss of peripheral vision, which gradually develops into the central field. The most common type is open-angle glaucoma, in which fluid in the eye fails to drain properly. Vision loss is gradual. In the other form, closed-angle glaucoma, the iris of the eye blocks the drainage of fluid, and acute symptoms can develop, such as blurred vision, severe eye pain, headache, nausea and colored rings around lights. This is an emergency situation that needs immediate eye care.

Diagnosis of Glaucoma During Your Eye Exam

During your regular eye exams, your optometrist in West Hollywood will test the pressure inside your eyes. The eye doctor will also examine the structures inside the eyes to detect any abnormalities, such as bleeding near the optic nerve.

Management of Glaucoma

With good management by eye professionals, patients can avoid vision loss from glaucoma. The daily use of eye drops can reduce intraocular pressure to prevent damage to the optic nerve. Certain types of eye surgery are also available for patients with glaucoma. Regular eye exams to check your eyes for glaucoma and other eye conditions are one of the most important ways you can protect your vision throughout your life.
