What is intense pulse light?

Intense Pulse Light

Intense pulse light, or IPL, is an innovative new approach to treating a common ocular condition called dry eye. You may also hear of it referred to as dry eye disease or dry eye syndrome. IPL treatment uses a sequence of rapid light pulses, carried out in a specific pattern, in order to stimulate the glands that are responsible for tear film production. This causes an increase in the amount of lubrication being produced, reducing and even eliminating the symptoms of dry eye.

IPL treatment normally requires the patient to undergo a number of sessions and generally, patients will notice an improvement in their symptoms with each session. The procedure is painless, and patients can return to their usual activities immediately after each session.

What is dry eye disease and how do I know if I am affected?

Dry eye occurs when the eyes lack adequate lubrication, and as a result, the patient experiences a range of unpleasant and inconvenient symptoms. There can be several reasons why a patient does not have enough natural lubrication in the eyes. It could be that the glands responsible for producing tear film aren’t working as they should, or that the tear film is draining too quickly.

Symptoms of dry eye disease include:

  • Dry, scratchy eyes
  • Burning eyes
  • Eye fatigue
  • Red eyes
  • Soreness
  • Blurred vision
